MT ROSA WINES
One of the best things about Mt Rosa (obviously apart from their sumptuous wines) is the fun, friendly and down to earth tasting experience in their new cellar door (Est 2021). And they have, arguably, the best philosophy of any winemaker today:
“Our goal is to limit the pretentious element in an attempt to create approachable, consistent wines which encourage the consumption of not just a glass, but the whole bottle. This helps create the holistic view that once we achieve this bottle state then there’s no reason why case consumption is not very achievable by the completely unpretentious.’
Mt Rosa is situated high up on Gibbston Back Road and depending on your interpretation one might argue the first vineyards in Gibbston Valley. In the 1970s the massive Kawarau Station was divided into 16 separate runs, on which one had grapes planted. Unfortunately, the local sheep and rabbits had their way and it took another 3 decades before a replanting. Today Mt Rosa makes great Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé wines on 35 hectares of vines.
